Mandatory Carriage of ECDIS
The IMO’s mandatory carriage of ECDIS came into force in July 2012. Legislation will be phased by ship type and size to apply eventually to most large merchant and passenger ships. Existing ships will have to fit ECDIS before the first survey following the implementation date. If you’re acquiring new ships, remember that the timetable for new builds is based on when the keel is laid, with a few notable exceptions.
Only official ENCs, which are vector charts issued on behalf of an authorised Hydrographic Office, can be used with a type approved ECDIS to comply with IMO / SOLAS chart carriage requirements.
